New Research Further Endorses Benefits Of Hyaluronic Acid in Oral Medicine

A new study soon to be published in the Journal of Oral Medicine has highlighted the benefits of Hyaluronic Acid in the treatment of gum disease, mouth ulcers and other conditions of the mouth. The study, which took place in Summer 2005 at The Dental School at Newcastle University showed that patients experienced a statistically significant reduction in pain immediately after the application of the Hyaluronic based gel.

The data conclusively showed that hyaluronic acid not only reduces the pain of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (commonly known as mouth ulcers) but also accelerated the healing of injured tissues in the mouth. A recent published study demonstrated that a topical application of Hyaluronic Acid represents a potentially useful adjunct in the treatment of gingivitis by reducing inflammation and encouraging tissue repair. Several other studies are due for publication all confirming the ability of Hyaluronic acid to reduce inflammation and reduce the healing time for the repair of damaged tissue by up to 50%.

This new data continues to support the increasing evidence about the medical benefits of Hyaluranon based topical treatments and continuing research in the UK and Europe has been planned for this year to further explore the natural healing properties of Hyaluronic Acid.

At present, Hyaluronic Acid is only available in the UK in an over the counter preparation called Gengigel. The only product of its kind available, Gengigel contains the active ingredient hyaluronan, which has been proven to double the body’s rate of healing of inflamed and damaged tissue in the mouth.
